The Woman Behind the Performance

For Moumala Nayak, those words connect many forms of expression. She is a dancer, singer, poet, composer, choreographer, designer and teacher. Each pursuit offers another way to interpret experience and share something of herself.
Alongside her artistic work, she has carried the responsibilities of single motherhood for two decades. She speaks proudly of her daughter and recognizes motherhood as part of the life that has shaped her. Her story gives equal space to the artist audiences encounter and the woman whose responsibilities continue beyond the stage.
Classical Roots, An Expanding Creative Life
A disciple of the late Pt. Birju Maharaj, Moumala belongs to the Lucknow gharana of Kathak. This classical foundation connects her to a tradition sustained through practice, observation and the relationship between teacher and student.
Her performances have taken her across India and abroad, including Japan, Canada, Italy and the United States. Yet the breadth of her creative identity also appears in quieter forms: poetry, composition, design and the continuing curiosity to explore.

Bringing Kathak Beyond the Auditorium
For more than two decades, Moumala has conducted workshops and lecture-demonstrations under the aegis of SPIC MACAY. This outreach brings Kathak into schools, colleges and rural communities, helping people encounter classical dance beyond a formal performance setting.
Her association with Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, New Delhi, as a teacher and examiner also spans more than two decades. As Founder Trustee of Rudraksh, she brings artistic practice together with cultural engagement.
Teaching gives her experience a continuing purpose. What she has learned through years of practice becomes something another person can discover, question and carry forward. Cultural continuity depends on these encounters as much as on the performances audiences applaud.

Moumala’s public journey includes a TEDx appearance at KIET in 2023 and a Lifestyle Magazine feature on her work in art and education.
