Shalinee Fernandez: The Global Counsel Who Leads Beyond Titles
From courtroom dreams to global boardroom influence, Shalinee Fernandez has built a legal career shaped by justice, resilience, ethics, ESG impact, and purpose-driven leadership.
Some leaders rise through titles. Others rise through the responsibility they are willing to carry.
Shalinee Fernandez, Vice President General Counsel at YTY Group, Malaysia, belongs to the second kind. A Malaysian lawyer, global legal leader, speaker, mentor, animal welfare advocate, and social impact contributor, Shalinee’s journey moves across litigation, corporate law, global operations, technology, manufacturing, ESG, compliance, and cross-border business.
Her story is not only about professional success. It is about becoming strong enough to lead, serve, and still remain deeply human.
A Calling Rooted in Justice
For Shalinee, law was never an accidental career choice.
Even as a child, the moment she understood what being a lawyer meant, she knew that was her path. Justice, she says, has always been central to who she is. Her early years in litigation gave her exposure to corporate, civil, and family law, while opening her own law firm at the age of 29 taught her the full reality of building something from the ground up.
She learned to bring in clients, manage legal work, handle billing, build credibility, and take complete ownership of her professional path.
But Shalinee was not meant to be limited by geography. She saw herself flying across the world, negotiating contracts, and shaping business decisions beyond borders.
That vision became her reality.
From Malaysia to Global Legal Leadership
Over the years, Shalinee’s career has moved across some of the world’s most dynamic business environments.
Her journey includes major roles with BlueScope, Atos, OLA, Ansell, and now YTY Group, a leading global manufacturer of premium nitrile gloves under the Indorama Group. Her work has covered manufacturing, ICT, ride-hailing, personal protective equipment, healthcare, supply chain, ESG, compliance, regulatory affairs, and global operations.
At Atos, she led key legal negotiations across Australia, New Zealand, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, including the Western Australia GovNext-ICT Project and the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games IT sponsorship and supply agreement.
Her chapter with OLA became especially defining. As a Malaysian lawyer, she moved into India and Australia to support OLA’s international expansion into Australia and New Zealand, leading legal, compliance, and regulatory matters across those markets.
At Ansell, she supported global operations and manufacturing across Asia-Pacific during one of the most challenging periods in modern business history: the COVID-19 pandemic.
Today, as Vice President General Counsel at YTY Group, Shalinee continues to bring together legal strategy, business understanding, ethics, compliance, and leadership at a global scale.
Leadership With Both Strength and Groundedness
For Shalinee, leadership is not about appearing distant, powerful, or untouchable.
It is about being able to sit with top management and the board, while still remaining grounded enough to understand the operational realities of the business. She believes a good leader must never shy away from basic work, new learning, or difficult situations.
Her leadership style has been shaped by pressure, resilience, and humility.
She has often been placed in situations where she had to learn quickly, adapt fast, and make sound decisions under pressure. Instead of resisting those moments, she treated them as opportunities to grow.
This is also why mentorship matters deeply to her. Shalinee believes knowledge should never be hoarded. Just as others once took the time to train and guide her, she now invests in helping junior lawyers, students, and future professionals grow.
Balancing Law, Business, and Ethics
Shalinee believes the role of an in-house counsel is not to obstruct business.
It is to help business grow legally, ethically, and sustainably.
For her, a lawyer must understand the business from the inside. Whether the matter involves ESG, global supply chain, technology, manufacturing, data privacy, compliance, cross-border contracts, or employment matters, legal leadership requires a careful balance between protection and progress.
She believes ethics is the cornerstone of business reputation. A company’s credibility can take decades to build, but it can be damaged quickly when trust is lost.
This is where Shalinee’s approach stands out. She does not see legal counsel as a function that says “no” to business. She sees it as a function that helps the business move forward with clarity, responsibility, and legitimacy.
Recognition Beyond Titles
Shalinee has received several major recognitions across her career, including Legal 500 GC Powerlist recognition, Women Icon of the Year, LexFalcon Top 50 Lawyers, Most Admired Global Indians, and other global honours.
But she does not define herself by awards.
To her, recognition is something to be grateful for, not something to build one’s self-worth around. She believes awards, titles, and accolades belong to a moment in time. What matters more is the person one becomes through the journey.
Her philosophy is clear: validation must come from within.
That inner strength is what allows her to keep evolving, learning, and moving toward new goals without being trapped by past achievements.
Beyond the Boardroom
Shalinee’s impact also extends far beyond the legal world.
Animal welfare has been close to her heart for many years. She has supported rescued and abandoned animals, contributed to medical care, and stood strongly against injustice toward animals. Her home and life reflect that commitment, including rescued pets and animals she continues to support.
She is also associated with social impact work through Kartavyam, a Delhi-based organisation focused on legal, social, animal welfare, women, education, environment, and poverty-related causes. During COVID, she helped raise funds in Malaysia to support daily wage earners in India with food and essential supplies.
For Shalinee, giving back is not optional.
It is duty, balance, and service.
A Message for Women Who Aspire to Lead Globally
To women who want to lead, break barriers, and create impact beyond titles, Shalinee’s message is powerful and practical.
Stand on your own two feet. Build yourself from within. Let your core be strong enough that challenges cannot easily shake you.
She believes women should appreciate recognition, but never make it the source of their happiness or identity. Growth must continue. Learning must continue. And once knowledge is received, it must be passed on.
Above all, she believes success should not only be measured by achievement.
It should also be measured by humanity.
In her words, the goal is not only to be known as a successful person, but to be remembered as a good human being who did whatever she could to make the world better.
